How can my son join Pack 305?

Just contact the Cubmaster or any adult involved with the pack. They can give you information on how to join, or direct you to someone who can help. Joining requires filling out a simple form and paying the yearly dues.

Who can join scouts?

Boys in first through fifth grades can join Cub Scouts.

My son doesn't attend St. Johns Lane Elementary, Veterans Elementary, or the St. John's Parish Day School, can he still join Pack 305?

Yes!! Any boy can join any pack he (or his parents) wishes as long as he meets the age requirements. Cub scout packs belong to the community, not to a school or church. The packs form partnerships with schools and churches in their community to get the word out about cub scouting.

What are dens and packs?

A cub scout pack is a group of boys of elementary school age and their families that join together to have fun, fellowship and learn new things. The families generally come together because they share some type of community: they may live in the same neighborhood, village, town or region; or they may attend schools and churches in the community; or they may be part of some other type of community such as homeschoolers or farming communities.

The boys in the pack are organized into "dens" under one of four ranks: Tiger Cubs (first grade boys), Wolves (second graders or age 8), Bears (third graders or age 9) and Webelos (fourth and fifth graders, or age 10 and 11). There may be one or more dens under each rank. Each den generally consists of 4 to 8 boys of similar school grade or age.

What is the sponsoring organization?

The Cub Scout pack belongs to a church, a school, or some other group of people in your community or neighborhood. This group makes sure your pack has good adult leaders, a place to meet, and exciting things to do. Pack 305's sponsor is St. John's Episcopal Church.

Who runs the pack?

The Pack is run by a Pack Committee of volunteer parents (or legal guardians or other responsible adults) that meets once each month. The committee selects the pack and den leaders, performs record keeping, manages pack finances, orders badges, helps train leaders, plans pack activities and provides assistance to the dens. Any parent willing to give a little time and effort is welcome and invited to join the Pack Committee.

How often do scouts meet?

Pack meetings are once a month, excluding the summer months. Pack 305 usually meets on the third Thursday of the month. Pack meetings last about an hour. There is usually one other special activity each month, such as the Pinewood Derby, hikes, museum trips, etc. The pack calendar shows the dates for many of these activities.

Dens meet about twice a month. The date, time, and location of these meetings is determined by the parent leaders of the den. Den meetings last about an hour.

Do parents need to attend scout events?

For Tiger Cub Scouts (1st graders), a parent or guardian must attend all events with the scout. As the scout gets older, there are events that he may attend on his own. We do encourage parents to attend events, both to support and have fun with your son, but also to help the adult leaders. Note that there must be at least two adult leaders at all scout events.

How much does scouting cost?

The cost of scouting includes yearly dues and the cost of the uniform shirt. In return, the pack provides BSA registration fees and insurance, a neckerchief, handbook, pinewood derby car, award pins, patches, and belt loops.

What about handbooks?

The pack provides each scout with a handbook appropriate for his age. The handbook contains the requirements for achieving his rank.

What about uniforms?

Uniforms can be purchased from the Baltimore Scout Shop, 800 Wyman Park Drive, Baltimore, MD, or online at www.scoutstuff.org. Parents supply the shirt, pack number patches, and neckerchief slide. The pack provides the neckerchief. Our pack does not require scout pants, belt, socks, or hat. Unless your den leader says otherwise, the uniform is worn to all Scouting activities.

What about Boy's Life magazine?

Each boy in Pack 305 will automatically receive a subscription to Boy's Life.
